Hi! I'm Prasanna Ramaswamy,
a student pursuing a Ph. D. in Photonics.

About Me

I am a PhD student at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, Ireland. I work with the III-V Materials and Devices group at the Photonics centre.

I graduated from the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Photonics programme which involved a year in Belgium (Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel), and another year at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

I did my undergraduate study in Engineering Physics at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India.

Research

My PhD research involves tuneable lasers for upstream data transmission in optical links. I aim to engineer a tuneable laser that will go inside Optical Network Units (ONUs) in the consumers' premises connected to a Long Reach Passive Optical Network (LR-PONs) that is (arguably) the future of optical communication links. It ties on to the European Union research project - DISCUS

Previous Work

Analysis of Travelling Wave Electro-absorption Modulators for 100 Gbps optical links

Master Thesis - KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden - 2012
Supervisor: Prof. Urban Westergren
This thesis work is an extension of the Travelling Wave Electro-absorption Modulators (TWEAMs) developed as part of the EU FP6-IST project HECTO partly funded by the European Commission. I investigated and showed the possibility of extending the use of the modulators to incorporate phase modulation formats such as DPSK from the current On-Off Keying (OOK) capability.

Investigation of drug delivery methods using Spectroscopic Techniques

Summer Internship - Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena, Germany - 2011
Guides: Prof. Christoph Krafft and Dr. Christian Matthäus
As part of the internship, I assisted with work involving culturing cancer cells, subjecting them to different drug delivery conditions and subsequently studying the intake of the drugs using Raman and FTIR spectroscopic techniques.

Digital Speckle Correlation for displacement measurements using FFT

Bachelor Project - Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India - 2010
Advisor: Dr. N. Krishna Mohan
I developed, as part of my undergraduate project work, an automated laboratory setup to perform displacement measurements using Digital Speckle Correlation.

Study of RFI filtering algorithms for the GMRT Software Backend

Student programme at National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune, India - 2009
Guides: Prof. Yashwant Gupta and Dr. Jayanta Roy
I was stationed at the institute's observatory - Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), the world's largest array of radio telescopes at metre wavelengths. I worked on various DSP based filtering algorithms to mitigate the Radio Frequency Interference present in the signals received by the telescope.
